Periphytic and planktonic algae records from the upper Paraná river floodplain, Brazil: an update

Abstract: The upper Paraná river floodplain is a strategic area for the Brazilian biological and environmental patrimony and contains several conservation units. We aimed to record the occurrence and the geographic distribution of microalgae in this floodplain during 30 years of research carried out by the Center for Research in Limnology, Ichthyology and Aquaculture - State University of Maringá. We consulted 80 publications (national and international journals and books published from 1986 to 2016). We considered only… Show more

“…Dispersal of these algal groups can also be in uenced by proximity to the river, leading to shortdistance dispersal. Thus, we believe that the algal communities carried by the wind are mainly of local origin, as the presence of most of the taxa found in this study was reported in other studies carried out in the Paraná River oodplain (Moresco et al 2017;Dunck et al al. 2018;Lansac-Tôha et al 2019;Silva et al 2022).…”

“…All species were represented on photo boards. New records for Upper Paraná River were identified based on recent works of Dunck et al (2018), Osório et al (2017), and . Descriptions, relevant taxonomical and ecological comments were provided for new records, conferatur taxa, and taxa identified until the genus level.…”

“…It has been reported that Phacus gigas is predominantly found in mesosaprobic environments. The species is rarely found in Poland, but it has a cosmopolitan distribution in Brazil (Cunha, 1913;Dreżepolski, 1922;Dunck et al, 2018). It has also been recorded from many rivers such as the Cértima River, Vagua River, Levira River, Segadães, and Frossos channels in Portugal (Pereira and Azeiteiro, 2003).…”
