“…Shrinkage is, however, only one potential consequence of peripheralization processes. Political or economic dependency, stigmatization, or dis-connection from the central cores are other potential dimensions (Kühn & Weck, 2012), often interlinked to one another. This interlinkage of different dimensions may be discussed by way of an example for the German context.…”

“…In the frame of the research project we used the wider concept of peripheralization-as a complementary process to centralization-to analyse structural changes in the cities under study. Peripheralization goes beyond persistent population decline and encompasses parallel socio-economic or political processes, such as political or economic dependency, dis-connection and stigmatization, in a relational perspective (Kühn & Weck, 2012). The underlying rationale for the project was to comparatively analyse how processes of peripheralization were perceived by local stakeholders; how they shaped the local scope for action; and how local policy-makers were dealing with them.…”

“…This emphasis on accessibility points to a certain intellectual lock-in of these quantitative approaches. Moreover, empirical research and policy concepts targeting the periphery are still often based on simplistic indicators like location and population density (Crone, 2012;Kühn & Weck, 2012). This can also be observed in Austria, as the example of the current national spatial development strategy shows (Humer, 2018, p. 646).…”

“…As a consequence, the predominant view still is that remote regions have little to offer for innovative activities and that cities are the main drivers for economic prosperity, especially amongst policy makers and in the public debate (Shearmur, 2012). In this regard, the peripheralization discourse argues for a more nuanced understanding of the core-periphery dichotomy (Kühn, 2015;Kühn & Weck, 2012). In addition to accessibility and population densitystill widely used in policy making but also in research (Crone, 2012) it advocates the inclusion of economic, social, and political factors for the analysis of regions and suggests a dynamic and multiscalar perspective.…”
