Peripheral neuropathic pain

Abstract: Neuropathic pain (NP) can have either central nervous system causes or ones from the peripheral nervous system. This article will focus on the epidemiology, classifications, pathology, non-invasive treatments and invasive treatments as a general review of NP involving the peripheral nervous system. NP has characteristic symptomatology such as burning and electrical sensations. It occurs in up to 10% of the general population. Its frequency can be attributed to its occurrence in neck and back pain, diabetes and… Show more

“…NP is characterised by hyperalgesia, allodynia, and anxiodepresive cormobidities [ 2 , 3 ]. Treatment of NP has proved difficult, as only about 2% of current drugs used yielded 50% pain reduction in addition to adverse side effects [ 1 , 3 ]. The multifaceted mechanisms involved in the development and maintenance of NP make it challenging to diagnose and treat successfully.…”

“…The overall prevalence of neuropathy-derived pain in the general populace is 7-10%. Neuropathic pain is more frequently diagnosed in women (8%) as compared to men (5.7%) (Murphy et al, 2020). The prevalence of neuropathic pain in the United Kingdom and in the United States is 1 and 2% respectively (Smith and Torrance, 2012).…”
