Perioperative treatment with octreotide minimizes technical complications after enteric conversion of bladder‐drained pancreas transplants

Abstract: We review our experience with enteric conversion of previously bladder-drained pancreas transplants (PTx) using a short perioperative course of octreotide (OCT). Between July 1994 and December 2001, 45 consecutive primary bladder-drained PTx were performed. Immunosuppression consisted of a combination of tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil and steroids after induction with monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies. A total of 16 patients underwent enteric conversion at an average of 3 months after the initial transpla… Show more

“…Furthermore, a systematic review of the literature is not available. Tables 7 and 8 give an overview of the results of different centers throughout the past 15 yr. With exception of one publication (47) in which the authors reported a high conversion rate of 39.5% that was explained with a fairly liberal and early conversion policy (on average thee months after SPK), the overall incidence of EC varied between 12% and 26% of BD patients. This variation is easily explained by the time dependence of this variable as displayed in Fig.…”
