Perioperative time and economic impact of an intracameral combination of mydriatics and anaesthetics in routine cataract surgery

Abstract: Purpose The aim of this study was to compare the perioperative time and economic impact of a licensed intracameral anaesthetic/mydriatic combination (Mydrane) during routine cataract surgery. Methods A real-life, prospective, comparative study was performed in 3 clinical centres in France. Preoperative, surgical, and post-operative times were determined for two mydriasis strategies using conventional preoperative mydriatics/anaesthetics eye drops (control regimen) or Mydrane administered at time of surgery. “…Other potential benefits of IC phenylephrine include estimated cost saving in medications and reduction in preoperative time and staffing (because preoperative mydriatic drops could be omitted), which may improve efficiency and allow more cases to be performed on the list. 3 , 10 , 60 , 61 This improved efficiency at the preoperative stage is counterbalanced by longer surgical time: although 95% of their maximum mydriatic effect was achieved 20 seconds after IC administration, not all eyes respond with the same speed of onset, with some pupils taking much longer to dilate. 28 The prolonged operating time may not be the preference of many surgeons.…”
