The pediatric surgical nurse has the unique opportunity to serve the pediatric population whose care needs vary across the span from neonatal to adolescence. The skillset and unique understanding of the individual pediatric patient and associated age are crucial. Ensuring the patient has an optimal experience with effective pain management is essential while providing care. Education and counseling begin during the perioperative phase and continue through each phase. Effective communication among the team is essential and the pain experience can be optimized through education, reduction of anxiety, effective communication, and the implementation of nonpharmacological and pharmacological interventions.
