Perioperative antibiotics in pediatric cardiac surgery: protocol for a systematic review

Abstract: BackgroundPost-operative infections in pediatric cardiac surgery are an ongoing clinical challenge, with rates between 1 and 20%. Perioperative antibiotics remain the standard for prevention of surgical-site infections, but the type of antibiotic and duration of administration remain poorly defined. Current levels of practice variation through informal surveys are very high. Rates of antibiotic-resistant organisms are increasing steadily around the world.Methods/designWe will identify all controlled observatio… Show more

“…T he infection rate in children after cardiac surgery with extracorporeal circulation (ECC) remains unknown, but such infections often are fatal. The surgical site infection (SSI) rate in pediatric cardiac surgery, which usually is considered ''clean,'' should be close to zero, but it is 1%-9%; and the post-operative nosocomial infection rate reaches 23% [1][2][3][4]. In the National Registry of Cardiac Surgery Procedures (KROK), the SSI rate in Poland is reported to be 1% [5].…”

As recomendações para a população pediátrica seguem as diretrizes publicadas para a população adulta, o que poderia não ser tão apropriado, dada a heterogeneidade populacional.…”
