Periodontitis links to concurrent systemic comorbidities among ‘self‐perceived health’ individuals

Abstract: Background and Objective Our recent work shows that periodontitis experience reflects host susceptibility to the onset of multiple systemic diseases and conditions. This cross‐sectional study further investigated whether and to what extent the existing periodontitis could reflect the concurrent presence of inflammatory comorbidities among ‘self‐perceived health’ individuals. Materials and Methods There were 115 ‘self‐perceived health’ adults who completed a questionnaire on demographic characteristics and life… Show more

“…So far, few studies investigated whether the number of systemic conditions in multimorbidity patients is associated with periodontal health status. One study conducted in Hong Kong did investigate whether periodontal health status reflects the concurrent presence of eight common systemic comorbidities using full-mouth periodontal examination, self-perceived health status questionnaires and 20 medical diagnostic tests [ 38 ]. It showed that those with worse periodontal conditions presented with poorer diagnostic test results and suffered from more systemic conditions.…”

“…It showed that those with worse periodontal conditions presented with poorer diagnostic test results and suffered from more systemic conditions. However, when comparing the comorbidity profiles with the severity of PD, most of them were not significant [ 38 ]. An Austrian study also indicated no association between the number of systemic conditions and the severity of PD [ 36 ].…”

“…A number of local and systemic factors can influence either the retention of periodontopathogenic bacterial plaque, with changes in its quantity and quality, or the ability of the immune system to effectively counteract bacterial aggression [ 3 ]. The latter include diabetes mellitus (DM).…”

“…Periodontitis is one of the prominent manifestations of some systemic diseases and is affected by systemic factors. Some systemic diseases can affect the resistance to bacteria, thus greatly increasing the susceptibility to periodontitis ( 14 ). Due to neutropenia and impaired platelet function, many HPS-2 patients, especially young children have gingival bleeding ( 11 , 15 18 ).…”
