Periodontitis is characterized by elevated PAI‐1 activity

Abstract: Objectives: Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease and has been associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVD). We investigated whether plasma levels of markers of a prothrombotic state were elevated in patients with periodontitis in comparison with healthy controls. Materials and methods: Untreated patients with moderate (n=53) and severe periodontitis (n=38) and healthy controls (n=39) were recruited. Levels of von Willebrand factor (vWF), prothrombin fragment 1+2 (F1+2), plasminogen activator inhibi… Show more

“…The Dutch CP patient cohort is a collection of three study groups as previously described. [34][35][36] Inclusion criteria for the German and Dutch AgP patients were age at diagnosis p35 years and X2 teeth with X50% periodontal bone loss. A set of full-mouth dental radiographs or panorex was available for confirmative periodontal bone scoring.…”

“…Although periodontitis has a chronic nature, acute-phase elements are also a part of the innate immunity in periodontitis and confirm that, in periodontitis, a systemic inflammation is present [30,31] . There are a number of studies which compare periodontal infections and the systemic markers of inflammation, particularly CRP [32][33][34][35] . Bizzarro et al [35] compared the CRP levels of periodontitis patients to those of periodontally healthy patients and found a statistically significant difference.…”

Bizzarro et al [35] compared the CRP levels of periodontitis patients to those of periodontally healthy patients and found a statistically significant difference. In agreement with Bizzarro et al [35] , most studies have shown a relationship between CRP and periodontal disease severity [34,36,37] .…”

“…Patiënten met parodontitis hebben hogere spiegels van PAI-1 (plasminogeen activator inhibitor-1), een molecuul dat de afbraak van een microthrombus remt (84). PAI-1 wordt beschouwd als een haemostatische factor die kan bijdragen aan de predispositie voor hart-en vaatziekten (85).…”
