Periodontal status (CPITN) of six-to fifteen-year-old West Malaysian aborigines (proto-malays).

Abstract: A survey of 303 six-to fifteen-year-old Proto-Malay children was carried out in Selangor, West Malaysia. The examinations were carried out using a chair-table and natural daylight. Periodontal status was assessed using the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPINT). The findings revealed a generally low prevalence of periodontal disease affecting only 25.08% of the sample examined. Of these, 15.72% were found to have a score of 1 (bleeding of the gingiva), while 9.36% had calculus on the tooth surf… Show more

“…The present study evidently showed that a majority (74.2%) of Santhali tribals routinely used twigs of sakhua trees ( Shorearobusta ) to clean their mouth. The results of the present study are in agreement with the studies conducted by Mandal et al .,[ 7 ] Vaish et al .,[ 11 ] Bhowate et al .,[ 12 ] Varenne et al .,[ 13 ] Abdul-Kadir Yassin,[ 14 ] Vaish,[ 15 ] and John et al . “…Operational characteristics of screening instruments can be assessed by validation studies. It is taken for granted that periodontal disease varies considerably among populations 16,17,20,21,22 and that severe limitations in the current disease descriptors exist 23,24,25 . These points should be considered when evaluating data from studies describing the periodontal health status of populations through these instruments.…”

“…Published studies on OA children’s oral health in Malaysia are still very limited. A study in 1987 found that periodontal disease was present in 25.1% (15.7% had Community Periodontal Index (CPI) Score 1, 9.4% had CPI Score 2) of an OA population sample aged 6–15 years [15]. Another study conducted in the state of Selangor in 1990 showed that caries prevalence in the primary and permanent teeth of 6–15 year old OA children was 87.3 and 53.5%, respectively [16].…”
