Periodontal disease progression and glycaemic control among Gullah African Americans with type‐2 diabetes

Abstract: Aim-To evaluate associations between glycaemic control and periodontitis progression among Gullah African Americans with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Materials and Methods-From an ongoing clinical trial among T2DMGullah, we extracted a cohort previously in a cross-sectional study (N 5 88). Time from baseline (previous study) to followup (trial enrollment, before treatment interventions) ranged 1.93-4.08 years [mean 5 2.99, standard deviation (SD) = 0.36]. We evaluated tooth site-level periodontitis progres… Show more

“…The first project was a genetic/epidemiologic cross-sectional study that investigated the prevalence of caries and periodontal disease in the T2DM Gullah population (Fernandes et al 2009; Marlow et al 2011a). The second project was a double-blind clinical trial to investigate the need for antibiotic therapy in conjunction with mechanical non-surgical therapy in the treatment of periodontal disease in this same population (Bandyopadhyay et al 2010; Marlow et al 2011b). Membership in the SIFP enhanced rapport, communication, cultural sensitivity and cultural humility.…”

“…& Poorly controlled diabetes increases the risk for deterioration of the periodontium, including clinical attachment loss, progression of periodontal pocket depth, and alveolar bone loss [27][28][29]. There may be a Bdose-response^rela-tionship: as glycemic control worsens, the greater the adverse effect diabetes has on periodontal health [30].…”
