Surgical procedures of the oral cavity can be performed by a number of dental specialists and clinicians. Because of the limited number of surgical procedures that can be performed inside the oral cavity, the boundaries between specialties may become indistinct and lead to confusion for general dentists in terms of patient referrals. In this article, what the two surgical specialties of dentistry (i.e. periodontology and oral and maxillofacial surgery) have to offer is highlighted, together with clinical examples to illustrate the interdisciplinary relationship between them.

The study of the functional living organism through biological phenomena and their piezoelectric and electromagnetic interaction of particles and energy in the functional cells of organ systems that sustain life through homeostasis, and their relationship with the external environment, can be observed as a unique effect called the biopiezoelectromagnetic effect. Research in sciences, combined with the use of innovative technological tools and instruments at scales ranging from the subatomic to the astrophysical, have made it possible to observe, through these individual or combined effects, a phenomenon that is repeated in all structures: the conservation of elemental information. This approach makes it possible to research from the particle to the functional living organism in its environment and vice versa. It is possible to propose theories that link energy, particles and cells and their organised structural complexes within the same framework, analysing the biopiezoelectromagnetic effect and the constant effort to maintain the homeostasis of living organisms in an entropic environment. Biomaterials composed of crystals and quasicrystals promote the piezoelectric effect in living tissue-biomaterial contact. The piezoelectric effect is already known to stimulate and form a fibrocartilaginous bone callus and its subsequent hardening into mature bone but has never been directly associated with homeostasis, osseointegrated implants and biomaterial bonding. The synthesis described by evidence-based experiments over the past centuries is robust to describe the biopiezoelectromagnetic effect as a cascade of events in the functional living organism to maintain homeostasis and its binding properties as the basis of osseointegration and the foundation of biocompatibility.

Sex steroid hormones (SSH) are extremely versatile molecules with a myriad of physiological functions. Next to their well-known role in sexual development and reproduction, SSH play active roles in practically every tissue in the human body, including the oral cavity. It has long been demonstrated that periodontal tissues express SSH receptors and therefore are responsive to the presence of SSH. Interestingly, SSH not only interact with the periodontal tissues but also with other tissues in the oral cavity such as dental enamel, pulp, cementum, oral mucosa, and salivary glands. Questions concerning the possible physiological functions of these receptors and their role in maintenance of oral health, remain unanswered. The purpose of this scoping review was to gather and summarize all the available evidence on the role of SSH in physiological processes in the oral cavity in humans. Two comprehensive literature searches were performed. References were screened and selected based on title, abstract and full text according to our inclusion criteria. Both searches yielded 18,992 results of which 73 were included. Results were divided into four categories: (1) Periodontium; (2) Dental structure; (3) Mucosa; and (4) Salivary glands. The interaction of these tissues with progestagens, androgens and estrogens are summarized. Sex steroid hormones are an overlooked yet fundamental factor in oral homeostasis. They play important roles in the development and function of the periodontium, dental structure, mucosa and salivary glands. Dentists and healthcare providers should consider these hormonal factors when assessing and treating oral health conditions.
