In Spain, efforts to obstruct climate action have tracked with shifts in politics. Historically, opposing regulation of the energy sector has been a main focus for obstructionist stakeholders, composed in this country mainly of industry lobbyists, political parties, news media, and neoliberal think tanks. In recent years, the ethics and climate impact of animal foods and exploitation have also become topics of public debate, showing the emergence of culture wars around environmental action. As in other contexts, communication strategies, public relations campaigns, and the selective dissemination of knowledge by special interests have characterized climate obstruction in Spain. To exemplify the particular discourses of climate obstruction there, this chapter provides two case studies. One identifies the role of think tanks, which oppose climate change mitigation and are networked with other international organizations. The other examines the efforts of animal agriculture industrial lobbies to slow progress in supporting compassion for nonhuman animals.

This study examines the relationship between sustainability reporting and tax avoidance, distinguishing genuine alignment with environmental and social commitments from greenwashing strategies. We also examine the impact of tax amnesty programs on these reporting motives. Using Indonesian nonfinancial listed firms in the 2010–2018 period, this study reveals that these firms employ sustainability reporting as a means of impression management to conceal their tax avoidance practices. Moreover, we document a negative relationship between sustainability reporting and tax avoidance when the firms participate in the tax amnesty program. Our findings are robust, and we provide several additional analyses to expand our contribution. Lastly, our study is believed to be one of the few that focuses on providing empirical evidence on how sustainability reporting is utilized as a “smokescreen” of tax avoidances.

El objetivo principal del trabajo es establecer bajo qué criterios de noticiabilidad han incorporado los medios las COP y la publicación de Informes del IPCC en su agenda. Se analiza la cobertura que El País y El Mundo realizan, comparando los principales hitos informativos en materia climática de los últimos años: Cumbres del Clima (COP24, COP25, COP26, COP27) e Informes Parciales del IPCC empleando la metodología de análisis de contenido. El espacio y relevancia otorgada a estas piezas es mayor en El País, siendo en ambos diarios dependiente de la Comunicación Organizacional, especialmente de actividades de Relaciones Públicas. Se identifican el activismo, la proximidad y la polémica como elementos clave en dicha cobertura. Se determina que el cambio climático continúa sin estar incorporado de manera regular en la agenda de los medios, con una cobertura desigual en función del medio y su apuesta editorial.
