Periodic Q-mode modulation in PSR J1825−0935 (PSR B1822−09)

Abstract: PSR J1825−0935 (PSR B1822−09) switches between radio-quiet (Q-mode) and radiobright (B-mode) modes. The Q-mode is known to have a periodic fluctuation that modulates both the interpulse and the main pulse with the same period. Earlier investigators argued that the periodic Q-mode modulation is associated with drifting subpulses. We report on single-pulse observations of PSR J1825−0935 that were made using the Parkes 64-m radio telescope with a central frequency of 1369 MHz. The high-sensitivity observations re… Show more

“…The magnetic field decay occurring in pulsars (especially in magnetars) has been confirmed by a series of theoretical and observational studies (Kaspi & Beloborodov 2017). The MDR model allows a change in magnetic moment M and/or a change in the angle α of a pulsar; the latter is usually companied with a change in pulse profiles (Wen et al 2016a, 2016b, 2020; Yan et al 2019, 2020; Zhao et al 2020). If the changes of M and α are considered simultaneously, the observed braking index n obs is obtained as nnormalobs=3+2ΩtrueΩ˙trueα˙tanα+trueM˙M from Equation (18) and Equation (19), where α˙ is the derivative of α , and M˙ is the derivative of M .…”

“…In a recent work by Basu & Mitra (2019), the periodic amplitude modulation has also been seen in the core single pulsar PSR J0826+2637. A periodic phase-stationary intensity modulation occurring in the interpulse and the main pulse was observed in PSR J1825−0935 (Fowler & Wright 1982;Gil et al 1994;Backus et al 2010;Latham et al 2012;Hermsen et al 2017;Yan et al 2019). Similar to PSR J1048−5832, the main pulse of PSR J1825−0935 is partially modulated with an unmodulated trailing component.…”

“…Periodic nulling has been observed in many pulsars (Herfindal & Rankin 2007, 2009Rankin & Wright 2008;Rankin et al 2013;Gajjar et al 2014Gajjar et al , 2017Basu et al 2017;Basu & Mitra 2018;Basu et al 2019b;Basu & Mitra 2019). Recently, periodic mode changing also has been reported in some pulsars (Mitra & Rankin 2017;Basu & Mitra 2019;Yan et al 2019Yan et al , 2020.…”
