Periodic Marangoni Instability in Surfactant (CTAB) Liquid/Liquid Mass Transfer

Abstract: Periodic Marangoni convective instability has been observed in a biphasic system during the mass transfer of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) from an aqueous to a dichloromethane organic phase. Visualization of the convective fluxes was possible thanks to the CTAB crystals that are formed in the aqueous phase at a temperature below the Krafft point. Surface tension and electrical potential oscillations have been shown to be correlated with the fluid motion. Surface tension measurements, representative of … Show more

“…26,28,30,31,3342,48 Since the early time of electroanalytical chemistry, the regularly irregular augmentation of the currents on polarograms beyond the level of diffusionlimited current, called polarographic maxima, was investigated. 6168 Shikata suggested that the origin of the polarographic maximum in the reduction of nitrobenzene was the adsorption and desorption of nitrobenzene depending on the applied potential.…”

“…In electrochemistry at the O«W interface, 7578 the observed oscillation of Á W O º 26,28,30,31,3342 has been explained in terms of the formation and destruction of the surfactant layer at the interface 33,35,38 or the adsorption and desorption of the ion-pair at the interface. 34,37,40 These models address the behavior under the unstable condition, but are not concerned with the fact that the irregularly augmented current appears only in a certain potential region on voltammograms in the ion transfer across the interface.…”

“…Cachile et al, 1999 found that the spreading of surfactant solutions on hydrophilic surfaces and the structure of the instability pattern were dominated by the mobility of pure surfactant and the relative humidity, especially for that higher than 80%. In recent years, Marangoni convections were also discussed in the systems of solute evaporating from a liquid phase to an inert phase, surfactant transport from an aqueous to an organic phase, and absorption and desorption of carbon dioxide into and from organic solvents by Colinet et al, 2003, Lavabre et al, 2005, and Sun, 2006 respectively. In general, the interfacial disturbance resulted from spontaneous mass transfer is insignificant, and it is difficult to observe by naked eyes.…”

“…In order to observe periodic Marangoni instability in liquid-liquid mass transfer device, transport of a surfactant, such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, from an aqueous to an organic phase in the static liquid-liquid contact system, as shown in Fig. 22, was performed by Lavabre et al, 2005. In general, the organic solution was placed in the bottom of the beaker, and then the aqueous solution was introduced on the top of the organic solution.…”
