Perilous effects of heavy metals contamination on human health

Abstract: Heavy metals form a versatile group of high density elements that vary considerably in their biological roles and chemical properties. Although many heavy metals are essential trace elements yet they have long been recognized as environmental pollutants due their toxic effects. Increased industrialization, urbanization anthropogenic activities like mining, smelting and other agricultural activities have resulted in accumulation of heavy metals in the environment. Heavy metals such as nickel, cadmium, zinc, cop… Show more

“…Lead affects body organs such as the kidney, liver, heart and skin. Also lead (Pb) is detrimental to systems like central nervous system (CNS), genital system, immune system, and several others [22]. Level of Cd (0.53 mgkg -1 ) in skin was highest in grasscutter whereas the least level of Cd (0.08 mgkg -1 ) was in hedgehog (Table 2).…”

“…Increased pollution resulting from excessive industrialization, urbanization, waste incineration and agricultural activities continues to magnify environmental contamination by heavy metals [1]. Various technologies have been used for the removal of heavy metals including filtration, chemical precipitation, ion exchange, electrodeposition, membrane processes and adsorption using activated carbon [2].…”

“…Meanwhile, there are many kinds of constants and trace elements that are beneficial to the human body in Chinese medicines, such as haicao, yam, red date, wolfberry, and haw. In the human body, the amount of trace elements is small, but it is necessary to maintain the steady state of the body [2,3]. According to the study, trace elements, including minerals, regulate myocardial contraction and the components of the cell membrane, involved in cellular function, lipid control stability, antioxidation, regulation of blood pressure, and blood clotting.…”
