Subsurface mineralization of CO 2 by injection into (hydro-)fractured peridotites has been proposed as a carbon sequestration method. It is envisaged that the expansion in solid volume associated with the mineralization reaction leads to a build-up of stress, resulting in the opening of further fractures. We performed CO 2 -mineralization experiments on simulated fractures in peridotite materials under confined, hydrothermal conditions, to directly measure the induced stresses. Only one of these experiments resulted in the development of a stress, which was less than 5% of the theoretical maximum. We also performed one method control test in which we measured stress development during the hydration of MgO. Based on microstructural observations, as well as XRD and TGA measurements, we infer that, due to pore clogging and grain boundary healing at growing mineral interfaces, the transport of CO 2 , water and solutes into these sites inhibited reaction-related stress development. When grain boundary healing was impeded by the precipitation of silica, a small stress did develop. This implies that when applied to in-situ CO 2 -storage, the mineralization reaction will be limited by transport through clogged fractures, and proceed at a rate that is likely too slow for the process to accommodate the volumes of CO 2 expected for sequestration.

Olivine and pyroxene‐bearing rocks in the oceanic crust react with hydrothermal fluids producing changes in the physical characteristics and behaviors of the altered rocks. Notably, these reactions tend to increase solid volume, reducing pore volume, permeability, and available reactive surface area, yet entirely hydrated and/or carbonated rocks are commonly observed in the field. We investigate the evolution of porosity and permeability of fractured dunites reacted with CO2‐rich solutions in laboratory experiments. The alteration of crack surfaces changes the mechanical and transport properties of the bulk samples. Analysis of three‐dimensional microstructural data shows that although precipitation of secondary minerals causes the total porosity of the sample to decrease, an interconnected network of porosity is maintained through channelized dissolution and coupled carbonate precipitation. The observed microstructure appears to be the result of chemo‐mechanical coupling, which may provide a mechanism of porosity maintenance without the need to invoke reaction‐driven cracking.

Petrographic and major element investigations on carbonates from drill cores recovered during IODP Expedition 357 on the Atlantis Massif (AM) provide information on the genesis of carbonate minerals in the oceanic lithosphere. Textural sequences and mineralogical assemblages reveal three distinct types of carbonate occurrences in ultramafic rocks that are controlled by (i) fluid composition and flow, (ii) temperature of the system, and (iii) the presence of mafic intrusions. The first occurrence of carbonate consists of different generations of calcite that formed syn-to post-serpentinization. These calcites formed at temperatures between 30 and 185°C (based on clumped isotopes) and from a fluid influenced by interaction with mafic intrusions. The second occurrence consists of magnesite, dolomite, calcite and aragonite veins that also formed syn-to post serpentinization. These carbonates formed at temperatures between 4 and 188°C and from fluids with highly variable composition and Mg/Ca ratios, but overall high CO2 and moderate SiO2 concentrations. High FeO (3.3 wt%) and MnO (7.3 wt%) contents indicate high temperatures, high water/rock ratios, and low oxygen fugacity for both carbonate assemblages. The third occurrence consists solely of aragonite veins formed at low-temperatures (5°C) within the uplifted serpentinized peridotites. Chemical data suggest that aragonite precipitated from cold seawater, which underwent little exchange with the basement. Combining these observations, we propose a model that places different carbonate occurrences in a conceptual frame involving mafic intrusions in the peridotites and fluid heterogeneities during progressive exhumation and alteration of the AM.
