Periconiella species (anamorphic Mycosphaerellaceae) from Taiwan

Abstract: Three Periconiella species were collected in Taiwan and investigated with light and scanning electron microscopy and nuc LSU rDNA analysis. A new species of Periconiella is proposed for a hyphomycete with apically branched conidiophores and relationship to Mycosphaerellaceae found on living leaves of Machilus zuihoensis and an unidentified species of Lauraceae. Two further species, Periconiella lygodii and P. perseaemacranthae, are recorded outside India for the first time and on new host species. Hadrotrichum… Show more

“…Notes : The present species was originally described in the genus Parastenella . However, judging from the SEM photographs ( Kirschner & Chen 2010 ), its loci were distinctly thickened, which is not a character typical of the generic description of Parastenella . Parastenella gupoyu produces erect, unbranched conidiophores and verruculose hyphae and conidia, characters typical of Zasmidium s. lat.…”

“…Description (adapted from Hosagoudar & Braun 1996 and Kirschner & Chen 2010 ): Phytopathogenic, producing diffuse leaf spots, colonies hypophyllous, sometimes large and confluent. Mycelium mainly external, composed of superficial brown and verrucose hyphae, internal mycelium sparsely developed, intracellular, hyaline to brown, finely verruculose.…”

“…The SEM photographs showing conical conidiogenous loci with smooth secession scar in the holotype of Thysanorea papuana and a specimen from Taiwan (Figs 14-16) were identical to those of Alysidiopsis lignicola (Mercado et al 1996). This ultrastruture is hardly distinguishable from that of Periconiella species (Kirschner & Piepenbring 2008, Kirschner & Chen 2010. The genus and species concept of Th.…”

“…not composed of a long stipe and a branched head), however, also occur in true (phylogenetically supported) Periconiella species, e.g. P. machilicola, as well as complex heads with up to four levels of branches (Kirschner & Chen 2010). Ramichloridium-like conidiophores were also recorded for a species tentatively identified as P. geonomae (Kirschner et al 2014).…”

“… Kirschner & Chen (2010) stated that the systematic position of Scirrhia was also in need of re-examination, and referred to a paper by Suetrong et al (2009) , who placed S. annulata ( Juncaceae ) within Mycosphaerellaceae . The clustering of S. brasiliensis in this family in the present study supports this finding and confirms Scirrhia as the first genus within Mycosphaerellaceae ( Capnodiales, Dothideomycetes ) with well developed pseudoparaphyses and an epi- and hypostroma.…”
