Pericardial Fluid and Serum Levels of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and Endostatin in Patients With or Without Coronary Artery Disease

Abstract: Patients with coronary artery disease have lower serum and pericardial fluid levels of endostatin and higher serum levels of VEGF. Serum level VEGF, but not endostatin, is associated with good or poor collateralization in patients with coronary artery disease.

“…The imbalance between VEGF (a stimulator of angiogenesis) and endostatin (an inhibitor of angiogenesis) has been demonstrated in many benign conditions other than diabetic retinopathy [39,65] such as ischemic heart disease [66], rheumatoid arthritis [67], emphysema [68], Kawasaki disease [67,69], ulcerative colitis [70], and neoplastic diseases as colorectal cancer [40], renal cancer [41], pituitary adenoma [71], breast cancer [72], and both primary [73] and metastatic [74] liver tumors.…”

“…99,104) On the other hand, several studies suggest that the serum endostatin level adds no predictive information in patients with coronary artery disease and chronic heart failure. [110][111][112] Thus, it remains unclear whether the upregulation of endostatin in cardiac diseases plays a role in the progression of the cardiac disease. Givvimani et al have reported that the transition from compensatory to decompensate heart failure is associated with the upregulation of endostatin following the activation of MMP-9 in the mouse aortic stenosis model.…”

“…On the other hand, most other previous studies did not include infectious diseases [6,9,17] or malignancy [6,17,18] in exclusion criteria, possibly leading to the discrepancy in the results between other studies and ours. Moreover, serum VEGF level is reported to be increased in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) [23,24] and stroke [25]. In general, diabetes is a strong risk factor for CAD and stroke, and these arteriosclerotic diseases often develop with age early in the disease process of type 2 diabetes.…”
