Perianesthetic mortality in English Bulldogs: a retrospective analysis in 2010 – 2017

Abstract: Background Many veterinarians consider English Bulldogs to have a greater perianesthetic mortality risk. The aims of this study were to 1) determine total and anesthesia-related, perianesthetic mortality (PAM) rates in English Bulldogs (EB), 2) identify potential risk factors associated with mortality in EB, and 3) determine the difference in the perianesthetic mortality rates between EB, other-brachycephalic breeds (OB), and non-brachycephalic breeds (NB). Records from EB that … Show more

“…Several studies have documented higher anaesthetic risk in brachycephalic dogs compared to non-brachycephalic dogs [ 50 , 51 ]. In the present study, only one patient (1.6%, 1/64) was reported by the owner to have experienced a post-operative complication associated with their breathing, which is lower than what has been reported in other literature [ 50 , 52 ]. This may also reflect the specialist anaesthesia service in a referral setting.…”

“…Consequently, peri-anesthetic mortality rates in brachycephalic breeds are considerably higher than those in non-brachycephalic breeds. Most deaths in brachycephalic breeds occur during the postoperative period mainly due to respiratory complications [ 21 ]. Therefore, postoperative airway management in these breeds is paramount, aiming to mitigate the natural tendency for airway obstruction [ 4 ].…”
