Perfusion safety: new initiatives and enduring principles

Abstract: Perfusion safety has been studied and discussed extensively for decades. Many initiatives occurred through efforts of professional organizations to achieve recognition, establish accreditation and certification, promote consensus practice guidelines, and develop peer-reviewed journals as sources for dissemination of clinical information. Newer initiatives have their basis in other disciplines and include systems approach, Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement processes, error recognition, evidence-based method… Show more

“…28,29 Collecting information on adverse events in registries will help prevent such incidents in the future. 30 An excellent tool that perfusionists can use for this purpose is the online Perfusion Improvement Reporting System of the Australian and New Zealand College of Perfusionists (https:// anzcp.org/pirs-ii/). Perfusion safety can be enhanced by a multitude of measures, such as the use of dedicated safety equipment [e.g.…”

“…It is critical to cope with the air within the ALF when massive air embolism occurs in the CPB circuit, for the reason that it is fairly difficult to completely remove the bubbles from the ALF once they enter the ALF which has already been in contact with blood. 3,8 The differences between the three de-airing approaches in this study are essentially about how to remove the air from the ALF and whether to keep the filter’s functionality. The Conventional Method is the classic CPB massive air embolism management approach taught in CPB textbooks.…”

“…Therefore, it is imperative to improve the knowledge and management of such rare, but grave CPB crises. 8,9 CPB simulation-based training utilizes a series of modern technologies and concepts to imitate real-life CPB scenarios, which provides the participants (cardiac residents, perfusionists and trainees) with risk-free cognitive…”
