During the last three decades low dimensional systems attracted increasing interest both from the fundamental and the technological point of view due to their unique physical and chemical properties. X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful tool for the characterization of such kind of systems, owing to its chemical selectivity and high sensitivity in interatomic distances determination. Moreover this technique can simultaneously provide information on electronic and local structural properties of the nanomaterials, significantly contributing to clarify the relation between their atomic structure and their peculiar physical properties. This review provides a general introduction to XAS, discussing the basic theory of the technique, the most used detection modes, the related experimental setups and some complementary relevant characterization techniques (DAFS, EXELFS, PDF, XES, HERFD XAS, XRS). Subsequently a selection of significant applications of XAS spectroscopy to 2D, 1D and 0D systems will be presented. The selected low dimensional systems include IV and III-V semiconductor films, quantum wells, quantum wires and quantum dots; carbon based nanomaterials (epitaxial graphene and carbon nanotubes); metal oxide films, nanowires, nanorods and nanocrystals; metal nanoparticles. Finally, the future perspectives for the application of XAS to nanostructures are discussed.

Combining high-resolution absorption and electron-emission spectra for CaF2, we have investigated the nature of the electronic transitions near the Ca L edge and the F K edge. The presence or absence of spectator and participator lines in the Auger decay of the core-hole excited states is direct spectroscopic evidence which enables us to infer whether or not the final state in the absorption transition is a bound state. Additionally we obtain information about the location of the excited-state electron relative to the ion cores.PACS numbers: 78.70.Dm X-ray-absorption spectra in the vicinity of absorption edges are known to be rich in chemical and structural information if they can be interpreted. The importance of absorption spectroscopy as a spectroscopic tool will increase as the resolution and intensity of the tunable sources that are available in the vacuum-ultraviolet and x-ray region improves.' In this paper we show, with reference to CaF2, that the electron-emission spectra which result from resonant excitation of individual absorption lines (deexcitation spectra) provide new information that is useful in the interpretation of absorption spectra in solids.The absorption in CaF2 near the fluorine K edge and Ca L edge have been studied extensively in thin films of CaF2 deposited on silicon. 2,3 The measurements reported in this paper were carried out on CaF2 films about 30 A thick deposited by evaporation on clean GaAs. Based on photoemission and electron-yield measurements as a function of film thickness we conclude that the CaF2 grows uniformly on the surface and that the films are representative of bulk material. The GaAs(100) substrates were cleaned by thermal desorption of the surface oxide followed by a repetitive sputter-anneal process. 4

Correlation between x-ray absorption and chemical potential measurements in lithium intercalated carbons

Using synchrotron radiation we measured the x-ray absorption (XAS) near the C\ s edge for powdered graphite, boron substituted graphite, and a disordered graphitic carbon. The chemical potential of Li intercalated into the same carbons has also been measured as a function of x in Li x C6. When Li is intercalated, the 2s electron is transferred to the C host, filling the same levels as probed by XAS. In XAS, final-state energies contain a contribution from the electron-core-hole interaction which mimics the situation in Li intercalation where Li + interacts with conduction electrons. We show that XAS results correlate well with chemical potential measurements of intercalated Li made on the same materials. PACS numbers: 78.70.Dm, 71.20.-b, 82.45.+Z, 82.60.-s
