Performance tests of a LaBr3:Ce detector coupled to a SiPM array and the GET electronics for γ-ray spectroscopy in a strong magnetic field

Abstract: Measurements have been performed with scintillation crystals of LaBr 3 :Ce coupled to arrays of Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) in a 3 T magnetic field. The SiPMs were read out by digital data acquisition systems, including the GET electronics system. Inside of the B-field, energy resolution values of 3.82% FWHM at 661.7 keV are reported for a 1.5 cubic LaBr 3 :Ce crystal coupled to a 6 × 6 array of 6 × 6 mm 2 SiPMs. No measurable degradation in energy resolution due to the presence of the strong magnetic fie… Show more

“…Such signals are used for further off-line correction of the collected data. Examples of FPN correction can be found in [8], [12] and [13]. All 68 (64+4) channels of AGET can be processed with three signal processing stages: 1) charge-sensitive preamplifier (CSA), 2) low-pass Sallen-Key (SK) filter, and 3) inverter with 2× amplification (Gain -2).…”

“…The GET electronics was configured to acquire signals with an external this electronics line was used to reduce the rate of the trigger signal similarly as described in [9], [10] and [13]. The measurements described below do not aim at an accurate identification of the detector efficiency but rather at optimisation of the energy resolution of the acquired γ-ray spectra.…”

“…Many efforts have been made to optimize large-area detectors with SiPM readouts (area 1 or more) to increase both the FWHM energy resolution [7,8] and the signal timing properties (risetime/falltime) [9]. FWHM energy resolutions around 3% or better were reached at the Cs 137 photopeak (661.7 keV) in [7] with 3 Ce:LaBr 3 crystals, and signal risetime less than 10 ns were obtained in [9] with a small 3 mm × 3 mm × 5 mm crystal read by a single 3 × 3 mm 2 Hamamatsu S10362-33-050C SiPM.…”

“…A readout based on SiPMs or SiPM arrays, instead of PMTs, allows the construction of compact detector, that may be used in external magnetic fields, avoiding the use of complicate shielding [2]. Good energy resolutions: around 3% at the Cs 137 peak (661.7 keV), comparable with the ones obtained with PMTs [3], have been recently obtained for large detectors (area > 1 cm 2 ) with a SiPM array readout [4], [5], [6]. Our efforts aimed at the development of detectors with large area (initially 1/2") with both a good energy resolution, down to 100 keV, and good timing properties, as shown in reference [7].…”
