Performance Study of Uplink and Downlink Splitting in Ultradense Highly Loaded Networks

Abstract: This paper provides new insights into the performance of Uplink and Downlink Splitting (UDS) in highly loaded wireless communication systems, in terms of both serving nodes and the number of users with high traffic activity. The study puts special focus on the gains that UDS could bring in terms of SINR and throughput when compared with systems with cell range expansion (CRE) in the classic downlink based cell association. CRE not only helps to offload users from macro-to pico-eNBs, but also improves UL servic… Show more

“…Red points are small base stations (SBSs) that are installed in street corners to boost line-of-sight connections. This scenario was first defined in [20], and it has been widely used as a common platform to test the performance of different radio resource optimization algorithms [21], [22]. [18], [19].…”

“…Table 1 summarizes the scenario parameters. The used propagation model is a 3D ray-tracing map-based model [20], which is similar to the METIS model for urban macro and micro cells [23]. The model automatically provides all the correlations and spatial consistencies due to it employs deterministic and physical principles accounting for scattering mechanisms, such as specular reflections, diffraction, scattering by rough surfaces and objects, and blocking.…”

“…The network deployment, considered in this study, consists of 17 macro BSs and a small BSs layer where the starting point is the layout obtained from the deployment planned by authors of [7]. The deployment resembles a sparse "half square cell plan" where small BSs are placed on the strategic hotpots and street corners close to the edges of the macro BSs coverage areas, see Figs.…”

“…We will carry out network simulations over a 3D city map of Vienna assuming first a sparser version of the heterogeneous deployment created in [7]. Then, we increase the network density by adding a large number of small roadside BSs.…”

“…To be more precise, as a starting point we have used the Vienna heterogeneous network (HetNet) deployment applied in [8], where small BS sites are located on macro cell edges. On those areas, the small BSs deployment is sufficiently dense to provide a continuous connectivity at 2 GHz frequency.…”
