Performance Studies of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells with Different Flow Field Designs – Review

Abstract: Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) is majorly used for power generation without producing any emission. In PEMFC, the water generated in the cathode heavily affects the performance of fuel cell which needs better water management. The flow channel designs, dimensions, shape and size of the rib/channel, effective area of the flow channel and material properties are considered for better water management and performance enhancement of the PEMFC in addition to the inlet reactant's mass flow rate, flow dir… Show more

“…Several factors affect the performance of PEM fuel cells, such as the preparation method of the catalysts layer [ 408 , 409 ], the design of catalyst ink [ 410 ], the catalyst loading [ 411 ], the size of the catalyst [ 412 ], the flow field design to supply the fuels [ 413 ], the type of fuels [ 395 ], the presence of contaminations in the fuels [ 414 ], the choice of materials [ 401 , 415 ], the operating conditions [ 395 , 401 , 416 ] and so on. Additional parameters that can affect the performance of a PEMFC are magnetic fields.…”

“…The serpentine shape generally generates a higher differential pressure than that of the interdigitated parallel shape. [46][47][48][49] Furthermore, because a liquid fuel (e. g., methanol or glucose) has significantly higher density and viscosity than those of a gas fuel (e. g., hydrogen or air), the diffusion is difficult to occur in the rib region of the flow field. [11] The channel region is dominant in the diffusion and reaction.…”

“…The channel structure in the bipolar plate can control the flow state of the gas. The rational channel design directly affects the global effi-ciency of the fuel cell [9][10][11][12][13][14][15].…”
