Performance parameters of the Hamburg 4 pi whole body radioactivity detector

Abstract: Large 4 pi whole body counters allow the use of very low doses of radioactivity in medical research and in routine diagnosis of patients. The electronics of the 4 pi whole body counter in Hamburg (HAMCO) have recently been updated. The detector contains 1360 I of liquid organic scintillator. Experiments combined with extensive computer simulations yielded quantitative information for whole body counters and comparable systems, (1) about physical parameters such as detection efficiency, energy resolution and ba… Show more

“…The total amount of applied radioactivity was measured immediately after injection. Blood samples were taken 1,5,20,40,60,90,120,180, and 220 minutes after injection to determine blood clearance. For the biodistribution of NP-HDL 59FeSPIO , the mice were perfused with 4% paraformaldehyde 220 minutes postinjection, and activity measurements were performed on the aorta, spleen, kidney, lung, muscle, heart, liver, peritoneal macrophages, and femur.…”

“…The activity, measured immediately after administration of 51 Cr, was arbitrarily set as the 100% reference value. The 51 Cr whole-body retention was measured at given timepoints in the centre of a 200 cm long 4p-geometry whole-body radioactivity detector with liquid organic scintillator in the energy range from 980-3,000 keV (Braunsfurth et al 1977). The biological half-life of 51 Cr was calculated from a triple term exponential fit algorithm to the measured wholebody retention of 51 Cr values in a period of 1-100 days after the administration of 51 Cr.…”
