Performance of Web proxy caching in heterogeneous bandwidth environments

Abstract: Abstract-Much work on the performance of Web proxy caching has focused on high-level metrics such as hit rates, but has ignored low-level details such as "cookies," aborted connections, and persistent connections between clients and proxies as well as between proxies and servers. These details have a strong impact on performance, particularly in heterogeneous bandwidth environments where network speeds between clients and proxies are significantly different than speeds between proxies and servers. We evaluate t… Show more

“…From their research, many approaches have been proposed [7,37]. Among the proposed approaches, the web caching technology is proved as one of the effective solutions towards reducing access latency (the perceived amount of time between a user sends a request and receives with a response), alleviating web service bottlenecks, decreasing server loads and increasing improvement of the scalability and quality of service of the web systems [8][9][10][11]. Web caching is a technology for the temporary storage of web objects (document, html pages, images, audio files etc.)…”

“…The rate at which dynamic documents are delivered is often orders of magnitudes slower than static documents [9,11]. Therefore, caching dynamic web content is Work done while being at Rice University, Houston and EPFL University, Lausanne.…”
