Performance of surface footing on geocell-reinforced soft clay beds

Abstract: This paper presents the results of laboratory model tests carried out to develop an understanding of the behaviour of geocell-reinforced soft clay foundations under circular loading. Natural silty clay was used in this study. The geocells were prepared using biaxial polymer grid. The performance of the reinforced bed is quantified using non-dimensional factors i.e., Bearing capacity improvement factor (I f ) and Percentage reduction in footing settlement (PRS). The test results demonstrate that the geocell mat… Show more

“…But settlement is very important in practical design of shallow foundations. The improvement in bearing capacity is estimated to be unreal in some studies [15,17,20] because of not considering the acceptable range of settlement. The footing settlement ( ) must not be more than 12% of the footing width ( ).…”

“…Latha et al [23] studied the consequences of a reinforcement form on strength enhancement of geosynthetic reinforced sand through triaxial compression tests. Sitharam et al [24] develop an understanding to the behavior of geocell reinforced soft soil, natural silty soil, foundations under circular loading by conducting plate load tests on circular footing. Zhou and Wen [14] studied improvement in bearing capacity of soft soil from geosynthetic materials included in sand cushion to fabricate composite layers through large scale model tests designed according to similarity theory.…”

“…Sides of this tank were braced properly with mild steel flat to prevent yielding of tank material while applying load on model footing. In this study model footing used was a 25mm thick mild steel plate of diameter 200 mm Base of this model footing was roughened by cementing a thin layer of sand with epoxy glue [19,20,24,25,28]. To apply load on model footing a manually operated hydraulic jack resting against the reaction frame was used.…”

“…Using geosynthetics reinforcement could reduce settlement of foundation and enhance the bearing capacities foundation beds [4][5][6][7]. Several researchers have studied the behaviour, of pipes embedded beneath geogrid reinforced soil, under surface loading [8][9][10].…”
