Performance of Straw/Linear Low Density Polyethylene Composite Prepared with Film-Roll Hot Pressing

Abstract: Thermoplastic composites are usually prepared with the extrusion method, and straw reinforcement material must be processed to fiber or powder. In this study, film-roll hot pressing was developed to reinforce linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) with long continuous straw stems. The long straw stems were wrapped with LLDPE film and then hot pressed and cooled to prepare straw/LLDPE composite. Extruded straw fiber/LLDPE composite was prepared as a control. The mechanical properties of these LLDPE-based compo… Show more

“…LLDPE is inexpensive, flexible, and is extensively employed in several different forms. One study has shown that the tensile strength of LLDPE is typically in the region of 6.1 MPa and that the tensile strength can be increased by the addition of straw fibres [ 31 ]. Another study has shown the tensile strength of LLDPE can reach 9.9 MPa [ 32 ].…”

“…LLDPE is widely used in many and various forms because it is cheap and flexible. One investigation has demonstrated that LLDPE's average tensile strength is around 6.1 MPa, and can be enhanced by the addition of fibre straws [50]. A second investigation claimed to have demonstrated that LLDPE can have a tensile strength as high as 9.9 MPa [51].…”

“…LLDPE is extensively used because it is inexpensive and versatile and has a tensile strength of about 6 MPa. This can be increased by adding fibre straws or multiple-walled carbon nanotubes to as high as 22 MPa [26][27][28], which would enable the uses of LLDPE to expand if it were to be used in combination with suitable additives.…”
