“…Problem-solving strategies include (a) administering oral and/or intravenous β-blockers to lower heart rate before imaging, (b) removing data collected on ectopic beats through ECG editing software after imaging, (c) performing retrospective imaging for significant arrhythmia noted before the examination, (d) using iterative reconstruction algorithms to reduce calcium blooming, and (e) using a saline bolus chaser ( 20 , 30 , 31 ). Recently, some vendors have begun developing metal artifact reduction postprocessing software, and preliminary data are promising ( 32 ).…”

“…Groves and colleagues performed a retrospective, cross-sectional study to assess the impact of a single energy metal artifact reduction (SEMAR) reconstruction method in 122 cardiac CT studies involving patients with implanted metal cardiac devices (pacemaker or defibrillator leads, prosthetic valves, surgical clips/markers, or spinal rods). 45 A defibrillator lead phantom study was also included in the analysis. Maximum beam hardening artifact radius, artifact attenuation variation surrounding the implanted metal, and image quality on a 4-point scale were assessed using standard iterative reconstruction and SEMAR.…”
