Performance of several solid state photomultipliers with CLYC scintillator

Abstract: Cs2LiYCl6:Ce 3+ (CLYC) is an inorganic scintillator that has recently garnered attention for its ability to detect and discriminate between gammas and thermal neutrons. We investigate several important performance parameters of three different solid state photomultipliers (SSPMs) when reading out CLYC crystals: linearity, energy resolution, and pulse shape and discrimination ability. These performance parameters are assessed at a variety of temperatures between −20 • C and +50 • C.

“…For CLYC, the FOM for neutron-gamma discrimination continues to improve at low temperatures. Similar results were obtained for a 1 cm 3 CLYC with a 6x6 mm 2 SiPM [6]. This behavior is not observed for CLLB and NaIL.…”

“…However, at higher energies the neutron detection efficiency for NaIL is an order of magnitude lower than CLYC. At these energies, neutron capture by 6 Li competes more favorably than other elements in CLYC, therefore, the neutron detection efficiency is commensurate with the number density of 6 Li. Since it is promising to manufacture large size NaIL, this would help increase the neutron detection efficiency [4].…”

“…A solution for the above limitations of the PMT is the use of the multipixel photon counter (MPPC), also known as silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), which is a new type of photosensor. The PSD performance of MPPCs was demonstrated to be comparable with that of a typical PMT in the n − γ discrimination using both organic [1] and inorganic [2], [3] scintillators. In this study, we evaluate the PSD performance of MPPCs and compare it with that of a PMT in chargedparticle discrimination using the CsI(Tl) scintillator.…”

“…Silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs) offer similar gain and noise performance to traditional photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs), but are smaller and lighter weight, and require tens of volts of bias rather than kV-scale bias typical of PMTs. Newer SiPMs with good response at blue wavelengths have shown excellent performance with elpasolites [13].…”
