Mobility management is the most important feature of a wireless cellular communication system. Continuation of an active call is one of the most important quality measurements in the cellular systems. Handover makes it possible for a user to travel between various networks or cells while having a seamless connection. This paper shows that, performance of cellular network can be increased with proposed adaptive soft handoff algorithm, which dynamically calculates the Soft handover margin based on the received signal strength and distance. Performance is evaluated in terms of the performance metrics active set update rate, active set size, soft handover region and probability of outage. Simulation results show that soft handover algorithm gives better performance with adaptive soft handoff margin compared to that of fixed soft handover margin in varied propagation conditions.Keywords CDMA · Soft handover margin · Active set update rate · Mean active set size · Soft handover region · Probability of outage · Shadowing process

In this paper, the downlink soft handover gain is analysed in UMTS networks under three different power control situations: without power control, with perfect power control and with imperfect power control. The results show that although power control in the downlink direction is not as crucial as it in the uplink direction, it does have a significant influence on the downlink soft handover gain. The downlink soft handover gain will be overestimated without considering the power control and underestimated without considering the imperfection of the power control process.

This paper presents a handover performance analysis suitable for implementation in TDD-CDMA cellular network. Firstly, RSCP (Received Signal Code Power)-triggered and SIR (Signal to interference ratio)-triggered hard handover measurement criteria for TDD-CDMA are analyzed theoretically and their performances are compared by simulations. Secondly, the handover parameter T_margin, which is defined as the margin of measurement value used in adding/dropping users to/from active set or full candidate set to avoid ping-pong effect, is carefully set and addressed. Thirdly, the optimum value of measurement reporting period is investigated. Finally, the influence of measurement error is described. As outcome of these analysis and simulations, some simulation results are illustrated and the conclusion is drawn that SIR-triggered scheme is more available to make measurement criteria. Simulations are carried out in a hexagonal macro cellular network with a dynamic system level simulator.
