Performance of Pitch and Stall Regulated Tidal Stream Turbines

Abstract: Controllers for a pitch and a stall regulated horizontal axial flow, variable-speed tidal stream turbine are developed, and a performance comparison is carried out. Below rated flow speed, both turbines are operated in variable-speed mode so that the optimum tip-speed ratio is maintained. One of the turbines has variable pitch blades, which above rated speed are pitched to feather in order to regulate power. The other turbine has fixed pitch blades and uses speed-assisted stall to regulate power. The control s… Show more

“…References [10][11][12][13] verified that the WT can realize the system primary frequency regulation under the rotor speed control strategy, so the problem that the WT can only participate in the short term frequency regulation and easily cause secondary frequency drops under the traditional inertial control is avoided. References [14][15][16][17] studied the frequency control method of the WT based on pitch control, and verified the effectiveness of the method.…”

“…Therefore, at equal power, the tidal turbine will be more compact than a wind turbine. This will lead to a significant difference in the rotor size [17]. Consequently, the advantages of these opposing views will appear in construction, transportation, and charge of installation.…”

“…In power limitation mode, the control is ensured by the angular position of the blades according to the hydrodynamic power limitation targets. Two control strategies are investigated in [19]; the stall and pitch angle controls. A comparative study about stall and pitch control of a TST was discussed.…”
