Performance of MRC satellite diversity receivers over correlated lognormal and gamma fading channels

Abstract: Multi-satellite or orbital diversity is an effective technique to reduce the large fading margins in satellite communications under fading conditions. Transmitted signals from multiple angularly-spaced satellites are combined at the terminal station which is equipped with multiple antennas or a single multiple-input (multiple satellite feed -MSF) antenna. Typical signal processing techniques used for diversity combining of the multiple satellite signals are Selection Combining (SC) and Maximal Ratio Combining … Show more

“…[1][2][3][4] The use of LN model has also been studied in different environments, namely, ultra-wideband (UWB) indoor channel, IEEE 802. 9,10 The role of LN in capturing the statistics of the composite fade of two or more simultaneous fading mechanism has been studied extensively in the previous. [5][6][7][8] Also, LN distribution is used for radar and satellite communication to model multipath and rain fall rate statistics.…”

[11][12][13][14][15] However, the complex mathematical representation of LN distribution endeavours analytical intractability in deriving the closed-form solutions of various digital communication performance metrics, [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] and it complicates the analysis of composite fading.…”

“…One way to improve these fades is to use diversity techniques, many of which have been published for satellite or terrestrial links, for example, polarization diversity [1], angle diversity [2], frequency diversity [3], transmit diversity [4], and space diversity [2,3]. Moreover, statistical models of signal-to-noise distribution or mathematical expression of outage probability have also been published [5,6].…”
