“…The results of the present study were comparable to the findings of Majid and Mahna [ 18 ] in which a total COD removal of 87% was observed at an HRT of 12 h in a lab-scale moving-bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) using Kaldnes K3 media for synthetic wastewater treatment. A similar trend of COD removal using Kaldnes K3 media was also observed by Jaafari, et al [ 19 ] where a total removal of 95.5% was observed in a modified phoredox reactor for municipal wastewater treatment at an HRT of 8 h. Shebl, Hassan, Salama, El-Aziz, and Abd Elwahed [ 4 ] also observed similar trends of COD removal (75%) in their study for treating medium-high-strength wastewater at an HRT of 24 h in ABR. Furthermore, another study on an ABR-AF system by Renuka, et al [ 20 ] reported COD removal of 90% at an HRT of 40 h.…”

“…All types of domestic wastewater generated by the residents is discharged directly into the household Johkasou and released into the environment or reused after treatment . The main process of Johkasou comprises the anoxic/oxic (A/O) coupled biofilm system, and this process has the advantages of high pollutant treatment efficiency, high impact resistance, and compact structure, which are especially suitable for the onsite treatment of wastewater. , With a half-century of development and improvement, the household Johkasou has attained globally sufficient advancement in terms of process and management technology, and the system has reached a cost-effectiveness ceiling. However, there are still two disadvantages limiting the wide application of Johkasou.…”
