Performance of ML Range Estimator in Radio Interferometric Positioning Systems

Abstract: The radio interferometric positioning system (RIPS) is a novel positioning solution used in wireless sensor networks. This letter explores the ranging accuracy of RIPS in two configurations. In the linear step-frequency (LSF) configuration, we derive the mean square error (MSE) of the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator. In the random step-frequency (RSF) configuration, we introduce average MSE to characterize the performance of the ML estimator. The simulation results fit well with theoretical analysis. It is re… Show more

“…The multipath error correction scheme was used to estimate each channel's multipath profile in the process of the mitigation of multipath phenomena in the radio interferometric positioning system (Cheng Zhang et al 2017). Authors proposed the scheme of multipath error correction based on phase and amplitude of the received signal.…”

“…Authors proposed the scheme of multipath error correction based on phase and amplitude of the received signal. As a result, the estimated errors during the transmission can be reduced significantly under both moderate and severe multipath conditions (Cheng Zhang et al 2017).…”

“…Applying the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) using grid search was proposed to estimate the range in this study. In [23], the objective searching function maximizes the summation for the exponential function of the phase difference. The MLE with a refined grid search will lead to an accurate estimate, but it will consume time.…”
