Fatty acid profiles of midgut gland (MG), ovary and eggs of Macrobrachium rosenbergii of wild and farm reared brooders indicate a significant variation of their components during the sexual maturation and spawning. In both groups, major fatty acids found in the chosen tissues were 14:0, 16:0, 18:0, 18:1n-9, 18:2n-6, 18:3n-3, 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3. Of these, saturated fatty acids dominate over the monounsaturated (MUFA), polyunsaturated (PUFA) and highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA). Though all the four groups of fatty acids are found in both groups except n-3 HUFA (P>0.05) other categories are found in higher wild brooders (P<0.05). There was a significant difference in total weight, total length and clutch weight (P<0.05) between farm and wild brooders, but the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and midgut gland somatic index (MSI) did not vary significantly (P>0.05).

Reproductive traits at the beginning and the end of the annual reproductive season were compared between two populations of the intertidal crab Chasmagnathus granulatus living in ecologically contrasting habitats: (1) Mar Chiquita (MC) (37°45ЈS, 57°19ЈW), a highly productive estuarine coastal lagoon with strong salinity Xuctuations.(2) San Antonio Bay (SA) (40°46ЈS, 64°50Ј), a physically stable but less productive coastal marine environment. Number, size, and elemental composition (CHN) of eggs and larvae diVered signiWcantly between populations. Regardless of the season, more but smaller eggs and larvae were produced in MC, while eggs and larvae from SA revealed higher dry mass and C/N ratios indicating higher lipid content. A latitudinal temperature gradient cannot explain these patterns, suggesting that other environmental factors including salinity, quality or quantity of benthic food sources and productivity may be responsible. In both populations, fecundity and biomass per egg were higher at the beginning as compared to the end of the reproductive season. As a consequence, the reproductive eVort was consistently maximal at the beginning of the season. At MC, also variability was found between two successive years. IntraspeciWc (both interpopulational and seasonal) variations in reproductive and developmental traits may be important for the formation of physiologically diVerent metapopulations along the wide geographic range of C. granulatus.

We investigated the investment of adult Dreissena polymorpha to the eggs by sampling mussels monthly from 4-and 15-m water depth. The fatty acid composition of eggs differed significantly between depths and over time. To assess whether temperature and food conditions led to the differences observed for mussels sampled from the two depths, mussels were reared in the laboratory under two different 3-month temperature regimes, simulating the temperature of the lake at 4-and 15-m depth. Possible effects of food quality were tested in each simulation using four diets differing in fatty acid composition: Cryptomonas erosa, Nannochloropsis limnetica [rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and long-chained PUFAs (ϾC18)], Scenedesmus obliquus, and the cyanobacterium Aphanothece sp. (deficient in long-chained PUFAs). In newly released eggs, specific (n-3) and (n-6) long-chained PUFAs increased when these fatty acids were available in the natural seston or in the laboratory diets. Mussels fed organisms deficient in long-chained PUFAs were still able to allocate arachidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid into eggs, which suggests that minimum levels of particular fatty acids were maintained in eggs by transfer from internal reserves of the female mussels to oocytes. In contrast to the diet, there were no effects of the temperature on the fatty acid composition of eggs.
