The sexual maturity of growing pullets can be retarded either by restricting calorie intake or by feeding a diet deficient in one or more essential amino acids, Several methods have been proposed for achieving either of these objectives. In this review the methods have been classified as (a) limiting the birds' time of access to food, (b) quantitative food restriction, (c) the use of low energy diets and (d) dietary protein restriction.Food restriction by limiting the time of access to food has given inconsistent results and is an unsatisfactory technique. Birds quickly learn to eat normal quantities of food in a very short space of time.Quantitative food restriction has been widely used in experiments and is usually applied from about 6 to about 20 weeks of age. The available evidence enables relationships to be established between the degree of food restriction and subsequent body weight and sexual maturity. The effect of rearing treatment on mortality and rate of lay is also examined.The ad libitum feeding of a low-energy growing diet has always resulted in greater rearing food costs. This is because moderate reductions in energy content of the diet are offset by higher food intake. Diets sufficiently low in energy to cause a reduction in calorie intake will involve the purchase and handling of very large proportions of non-nutritive material.The use of protein-deficient diets during the growing period, or from one day of age, offers a suitable means of delaying sexual maturity. The effects of such a treatment are apparently very similar to those of restricted feeding, but there is a lack of suitable comparisons of the alternative methods.

Day-old pullets (Hisex-strain Leghorn) were fed a starter ration ad libitum to 10 weeks of age. Individually weighed at 9 weeks of age they were sorted into 3 weight groups. Treatment 1, from the smallest weight group, was full-fed from 10 to 19 weeks of age. Treatment 3, from the middle third, was full-fed initially then restricted as necessary to maintain the recommended weight. Treatment 4, from the heaviest third, was restricted to attain the recommended weight at 19 weeks of age. Treatments 2 and 5 represented random samples of equal numbers from each weight. Pullets in treatments 2 and 5 were full-fed and restricted-fed, respectively.Differences which existed among the mean weights of treatments 1,3, and 4 at 9 weeks of age decreased to 15 g at 19 weeks. At 19 weeks of age the pullets in these treatments averaged 80.7% to 84.0 ± 10% of the average weight.At 19 weeks of age, 96 pullets per treatment were further divided into eight replicates and transferred to layer cages. Pullets in treatment 4 (heaviest third, restricted-fed) were significantly older when reaching 10 and 50% production than were pullets in treatments 1, 2, and 3. The mean egg weights of pullets in treatments 4 and 5 were larger (P<.01) than those from the other treatments.Differences among treatments in hen-day production, gram of egg per hen day, grams of feed per gram of egg, feed per hen day, Haugh units, shell thickness, and mortality were not significant. Two experiments are described in which the daily metabolisable energy intake of laying hens fed a concentrated diet (ME = 3550 kcal/kg) was restricted on an individual hen basis. Performance on this diet was compared with that of hens fed a high-energy diet (ME = 2690 kcal/kg). In experiment 1 medium-weight hybrid pullets were used and in experiment 2 two light-weight hybrid strains were used.In both experiments maximum egg production was obtained from the birds fed the high-energy diet ad libitum. Restriction of the concentrated diet caused a significant reduction of body weight gain and a statistically insignificant fall in the total weight of egg product and in percentage production in both experiments.Restriction of the concentrated diet caused improvements of 22 and 18 per cent in the efficiency of utilisation of metabolisable energy in experiments 1 and 2 respectively.The data are discussed in relation to the relevant literature and the current cost of concentrated sources of energy.
