Performance of Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag and Coal Fly Ash Ternary Portland Cements Exposed to Natural Carbonation

Abstract: Ternary Portland cements are new cementitious materials that contain different amounts of cement replacements. Ternary Portland cements composed of granulated blast-furnace slag (GBFS), coal fly ash (CFA), and clinker (K) can afford some environmental advantages by lowering the Portland cement clinker use. Accordingly, this is an opportunity to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Furthermore, GBFS and CFA possess pozzolanic properties and enhance the mechanical streng… Show more

“…This result can be attributed to the irregular-shaped particles from GBFS and MD, leading to the reduction in the friction factor and enhancement in the workability performance [ 51 ]. In addition, increasing the fineness of the total particles in the SCC mixture can increase the amount of mixing water for the required consistency, which could lead to an increase in the porosity of the concrete [ 56 ].…”

“…At the same time, these characteristics of solutions with the addition of DHS as frost resistance [30] and resistance to chlorides [34], sulfates [33], and various acids [26,32] were studied. Moreover, the authors of many works consider the joint effect of GBFS and other additives (ash, limestone, gypsum, nanosilica) on the formation of the micro-and macrostructure of materials based on them and their physical and mechanical characteristics [10,28,30,[35][36][37][38].…”

“…Fine grinding results in a larger surface area, but agglomeration is a limitation of the specific surface area." [6] The issue of studying the influence of the specific surface area of ground granulated slag was also studied in [7][8][9][10][11]. The crucial result of the conducted research is the identification of an extremum on the curve of dependence of the strength of the final material on the specific surface area.…”
