Performance of five potato varieties with regards to growth and production of mini-tubers under an aeroponic system in central highlands of Kenya

Abstract: There is limited information on the performance of Kenyan potato varieties under aeroponic systems. Experiments were therefore carried out at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI), Tigoni, under an aeroponic system in 2012 and 2013 to evaluate the growth and mini-tubers production of five varieties commonly grown in Kenya and differ in vegetative and reproductive characteristics. The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) replicated three times. Plant growth expressed by … Show more

“…Unica gave the highest yield per hectare (7.94 t ha − 1 and 9.19 t ha − 1 in experiment one and two, respectively) followed by Nyota, Wanjiku and Shangi (Table 5). Previous studies by Mbiyu et al (2018) reported that different potato varieties performed differently due to the differences in varietal genetic make-up. These results concur with Akoto et al (2020) where Unica was reported to have a high yields of 40.5 t ha − 1 as compared to Shangi 19.6 t ha − 1 .…”

“…The size of minitubers affects the duration of dormancy, seed vigour, stem numbers and the vigour of individual stems, disease and pest susceptibility and environmental stresses (Mbiyu et al 2018). Application of N125 supplied adequate amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus which increased tuber sizes due to their function in allocating assimilates in tubers and tuber bulking (Koch et al 2020;Petropoulos et al 2020).…”
