Currently, scientific research in the field of nanotechnology has attracted growing interest because of its several applications. The metal oxides have high added value in industrial processes and in addition, human exposure to these nanoparticles can cause respiratory problems. Filtration using fibrous filters is among the various options that can be used to provide efficient elimination of nanoparticles. While it is known that fibrous filters can successfully remove microparticles present in the air, there has been little research concerning the removal of nanoparticles using nickel oxide nanoparticles. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of three HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter media with glass and micro-quartz fiber for the removal of nickel oxide nanoparticles. Two HEPA filter with glass fibers (H1 and H2) and one HEPA filter with micro-quartz fibers (H3). Nanoparticles were generated using an atomizer generator through a 0.1 g/L nickel oxide water suspension. The efficiency of filter media was measured using an electrical mobility particle analyzer (SMPS) coupled to the filtration line and particles were counted before and after the filter media in the size range between 7.4 and 289 nm. Both filter media had efficiency collection above 99% but H1 filter stand out among the others.

In this study, electret media were loaded with neutralized and charged potassium chloride (KCl) to examine the effect of charged solid particles on loading behaviour. The media were then loaded with diethylhexyl sebacate (DEHS), dipropylene glycol (DPG) and glycerol to obtain a correlation between the efficiency degradation and liquid aerosol. The results indicated that the efficiency of electret media decreased from 72% to 46% under the neutralized KCl loading whilst the efficiency decreased from 96% to 82% under the positively charged KCl loading. Particle charging increased the initial efficiency and also effectively minimized the efficiency degradation. Given the increase in efficiency via chargers, the deposition morphology of the solid particles on the fibres was changed to mitigate the efficiency degradation. With respect to electret media loaded with DEHS, DPG and glycerol, the decrease in efficiency was associated with the solubility difference between the fibres and oil aerosols. Given sufficient affinity between the oil particles and fibres, oil molecules permeated the chain segments of the fibres and produced swelling that damaged the charge traps and decreased efficiency. The results of this study can guide practical electret filter operations and provide a better indoor environment.

The performance of fibrous air filter media is one of the key factors to influence the indoor air quality. In order to develop low-resistance and high-efficiency media, it is necessary to obtain a realistic media model. Based on the truncated log-normal model, the D2G9 scheme of Lattice Boltzmann (LB) method was applied to predict both the resistance and the filtration efficiency of the flow through microscale porous media. The influences of the boundary conditions were investigated. The slip and no-slip boundary conditions on fiber surfaces, as well as the non-equilibrium extrapolation scheme and the periodic scheme, were included in this study. By validating the simulated results with both the experimental and empirical values, it was found that the simulated resistance with the slip boundary on fiber surface and the periodic scheme on upper/lower walls was closer to the real value. The model established in this paper and the LB method presented here provide support for further research on optimization of the fibrous air filter media.Keywords: Fibrous media; LB method; Slip boundary condition; Resistance; Efficiency.
