Improving the performance of mushroom in terms of high production and fast growth rate is essential in mushroom cultivation. In the present study the performance of Pleurotus ostreatus was evaluated using varying levels of wheat bran (WB) and maize flour (MF). The results indicated that Pleurotus ostreatus was highly influenced by different levels of supplementation, with 8% WB, 18% WB and 2% MF having higher contamination rate. The low levels of supplementation gave significantly better mycelial growth rate (MGR) and shorter colonisation period as observed that the control had highest MGR whereby 20% MF had lowest MGR. The pinning time (TP) was shortest at the first flush with minimum of 3 days (12% MF). The higher levels of supplementation showed maximum biological efficiency (BE) such as 14% MF, 12% WB and 14% WB. The yield was also higher at high levels of supplementation such as 20% MF and 8% MF being the exception in the lower levels. Based on the results it was observed that for fast production of oyster mushroom there is no need to supplement the maize stalk substrate but for improved productivity supplements can be added up to certain limits such as 14% MF and 12 WB. Keywords: biological efficiency; Pleurotus ostreatus; supplement; maize stalkPractical Application: The study will add to the pool of scientific knowledge relating to optimum substrate formulations (supplements) involving maize residues for Pleurotus ostreatus mushroom production. The results observed can be useful to small scale farmers who are willing to obtain good yield within minimal time at minimal cost with reduced contamination problems. Based on the results obtained, it is recommended that for fast production there is no need to add supplements on maize stalks but for improved production supplements can be added up to certain limits.

An investigation was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of four different types of grain spawns viz; kurakkan (Eleusine coracana), maize (Zea mays), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), and paddy (Oryza sativa) on oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) mushroom production. Spawn types were based on their effects on mushroom solids (%), biological efficiency (BE %), size (g), number of sporophores, yield, yield ratio and substrate weight loss (%). Locally available kurakkan (Eleusine coracana), maize (broken) (Zea mays), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), and paddy (Oryza sativa) were used for spawn production. The experiment was designed as a complete randomized design with three replicates. Four types of spawns were tested on a medium based on sawdust. The growing media (substrate) inoculated with kurakkan spawns showed the highest biological efficiency of 27.82± 0.12 (%) , mean yield of 52.94 ± 0.67 g, mushroom size of 7.73 ± 0.33 g and yield ratio of 23.19 ± 0.01. The harvests obtained from paddy spawn showed the highest mushroom solids of 9.97 ± 0.26 (g/100g of harvest). Highest mean numbers of sporophore (fruiting bodies) were noticed in the harvests obtained from sorghum spawn (7.67 ± 0.66). The kurakkan spawn significantly. Enhanced biological efficiency and increased size and yield, when compared with other spawn types viz; maize (Zea mays), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), and paddy (Oryza sativa).

The low digestibility and low protein content of maize cob are major limitations to its use as animal feed in Ghana. The possibility of enhancing the feed potential of maize cob through solid state fermentation by Pleurotus ostreatus strain EM-1 was investigated. At the end of spawn run, lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose content had decreased by 42.3, 5.6% and 41.0% respectively. No further reduction in lignin content occurred thereafter. In contrast, after 28 days, cellulose and hemicellulose had been degraded by 36.0% and 58.5% respectively. A biphasic protein profile, characterized by a 6-fold increase by day 14, followed by a dramatic decline was observed. The rate of release of reducing sugars from spent maize cobs during incubation with exogenous cellulase was 400% greater than that of untreated maize cobs. The present findings indicate that the positive effects of P. ostreatus strain EM-1 on the nutritive value of maize cob appear to be optimal after complete colonization by mycelia. At this stage, maximum biodegradation of lignin had occurred, protein content was markedly elevated and the reduction in cellulose content was negligible. Thus, solid state fermentation by Pleurotus ostreatus strain EM-1 may be an efficient means of transforming maize cob into nutritive animal feed.
