Performance of different advanced oxidation processes for tertiary wastewater treatment to remove the pesticide acetamiprid

Abstract: BACKGROUND This work studied the performance of different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) as tertiary treatment for removal of the pesticide acetamiprid from water. Specifically, UV, UV/TiO2, UV/H2O2/Fe, and two systems with persulfate (PS), UV/PS and UV/PS/Fe, were evaluated. RESULTS The study was carried out in deionised water, synthetic water from a secondary effluent and real effluent from a conventional activated sludge effluent (CAS effluent). In addition, the effect of humic acids, lignin‐derivative… Show more

“…Specifically, SAC removal percentages decreased from 99.9% to 27% and 55.1% to 15% under UV‐LED and UV‐BL irradiation, respectively. The observed removal efficiency may be attributed to a partial expenditure of oxidizing radicals for the degradation of HA by UV/TiO 2 which lowers the ratio of oxidant species to SAC molecules and further limits SAC oxidation.…”

“…11 The AAP residues in water may affect the sensitive aquatic invertebrates living in it and therefore produce risks to the ecosystem. AAP is known to be stable under alkaline conditions and can persist for more than 30 d. 12 Elimination of AAP residues from the environment by chemical and photochemical methods have been largely reported.…”

“…AOPs involve the generation and use of powerful redox transient species, mainly the hydroxyl radical (HO . ) . Hydroxyl radical can be generated by various methods listed below and effectively oxidizes the contaminants present in water, mainly organic matter and microorganisms.…”
