Performance of corn leaf aphid, Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) (Homoptera: Aphididae) on selected maize hybrids under laboratory conditions

Abstract: The corn leaf aphid, Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) is one of the most important pests of maize with worldwide distribution. The use of relatively resistant corn hybrids may lessen the harmful effects by this aphid; we therefore compared population growth parameters of R. maidis reared on six commonly grown maize hybrids in Iran, namely K3640/3ϫMO17, Simon, SC704, EXP1, VRE26ϫK18 and VRE27ϫK18. The experiments were carried out under conditions of 25Ϯ1 o C, 60Ϯ10% RH, and a photoperiod of 16L8D. The development t… Show more

“…Insect resistant cultivars can be effective alternative to pesticides to maintain pest population under their economic injury levels (EILs) (Robinson et al 1991, Webster et al 1991, Porter et al 2009). Moreover, the usage of resistant cultivars has been shown as a more practical approach to limit cereal aphids, because cereal leaves rolled because of the aphifeeding can reduce the efÞciency of contact aphidicides and biological control methods (Burd et al 1993, Haile et al 1999, Razmjou and Golizadeh 2010.…”

“…In addition, such changes in climatic conditions could profoundly affect the population dynamics and the status of insect pests of crops (Woiwod, 1997). Development of aphid is faster in warmer temperature (Kuo, et al, 2006;Park and Obrycki, 2004;Razmjou and Golizadeh, 2010;Sharma and Bhatnagar, 2002).…”

“…The life table technique is employed to evaluate the suitability or resistance of host plants in relation to diverse insect pests. Such insects include the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) (Zeng et al 1993); the spirea aphid, Aphis spiraecola (Patch) (Tsai and Wang 2001); the aphid, Brachycaudus schwartzi (Borner) (Satar and Yokomi 2002); the English grain aphid, S. avenae (Fabricius) (Ö zder 2002); the thrips, Thrips palmi (Karny) (Frel et al 2003); the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii (Glover) (Razmjou et al 2006); and the corn leaf aphid, Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) (Razmjou and Golizadeh 2010). Moreover, the development and fecundity rate of aphids and other insects are the most important parameters in classifying the resistance of wheat varieties.…”
