Extra‐large (XL) hybrid confection sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) achenes are popular among snack food consumers, but these achenes perform poorly with precision planters; therefore, the option of planting coated seed from XL achenes was evaluated in this study. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the effect of various coating materials and buildup levels on live seed emergence, precision planting, stand establishment, and crop performance under field conditions. Based on the laboratory results on germination and plantability, four coating materials (polymer A, polymer B, zeolite, and lime) at 30 and 35% buildup levels were selected for the field trails at Prosper, ND. A separate smaller field study was conducted at Minot, ND, to verify the performance of coated seed under different growing conditions. At both Prosper and Minot locations, all the coated seed treatments resulted in significantly higher live seed emergence and grain yield than XL achenes. Live seed emergence of all the coated seed (93–99%) was significantly higher than the XL achenes (88%), and similar or higher than the large achenes (94%) at Prosper. Laboratory singulation of all the coated seed was superior to both XL achenes and large achenes, which contributed to uniform seed spacing in the field for the coated seed. Overall, this study showed that coating the hulled seeds substantially increased seed plantability and crop performance compared with XL achenes and even large achenes. A successful outcome of this study may extend this research to other sunflower seed sizes and possibly other crops.

Seed coatings improve germination and offer higher crop yields through a blend of active ingredients (such as insecticides and fungicides), polymers, waxes, fillers, and pigments. To reach their full potential, fundamental formulation challenges bridging structure and function need to be addressed. In some instances, during industrialvolume packing and transportation, coated seeds do not flow well through elevators, conveyers, and applicators, which may reduce yield and add cost. In this work, we illustrate a combinatorial chemical imaging approach to study seed coatings at the microscale to link chemical and physical properties responsible for low seed flowability. The local chemical composition was examined using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and at comparable length scales, the local adhesive properties were examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM) force volume mapping. The link between the chemical and the adhesive properties was established by non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). The correlative multimodal imaging approach developed here utilizing AFM force volume mapping, ToF-SIMS chemical mapping, and data analytics offers a path for linking function with localized chemistry when investigating multicomponent soft material systems.

Comparison of Soy Protein Based and Commercially Available Seed Lubricants for Seed Flowability in Row Crop Planters

Abstract. Seed lubricants play a crucial role in proper seed singulation by ensuring a smooth flow of the seeds through the metering unit. However, the harmful chemicals inadvertently expelled along with the air during the seed metering process have raised concerns regarding the negative effects of available lubricant to the environment. An alternative has been developed from soy protein, however, no knowledge exists regarding its suitability as a potential seed lubricant. Therefore, the objectives of this study was (1) to assess seed flowability by quantifying seed singulation for both corn () and soybean () crops, and (2) to perform a simple cost analysis to determine the cost of usage of each seed lubricant. To address these objectives, two Horsch planter row units were used to run simulated planting scenarios in the laboratory. One row unit was equipped with a seed tube sensor to record seed tube seed count and time interval while the other one was fitted with an encoder to record seed meter motor rpm. These data were used to quantify percentage seed singulation, skips/misses, and multiples. Treatment factors were seed size with three levels: small, medium, large and seed lubricant with four levels: talc, fluency agent; soy protein based, and fourth being no lubricant. Row unit was programmed to plant seeds at 7.2 kph (5 mph) simulated ground speed with a target population of 89,000 seeds/ha for corn and 370,000 seeds/ha for soybean. Each test was replicated three times in a completely randomized design. For corn, result suggests that large seeds of different shapes showed greater singulation irrespective of type of seed lubricant. For soybeans, results suggest that both seed lubricant and seed size could potentially affect seed flowability. Medium size soybeans exhibited greater singulation for all four levels of seed lubricants while Fluency Agent and soy protein resulted in greater singulation along with fewer skips and multiples. A cost analysis shows that usage cost of soy protein as seed lubricant is 63% less expensive as compared to Fluency Agent although slightly expensive by 44% compared to talc. In summary, soy protein could be an alternative seed lubricant for row crop planters in providing equivalent or better seed flowability, cost-effectiveness and environmental stewardship.
