Performance of Chrysanthemum or Chrysanthemum Morifolium Ramat (CV. Balady) in Different Saline Water Irrigated Soils and Growing Media

Abstract: As a result of the decreasing availability of high-quality irrigation water, the salinity tolerance of cut flowers is of increasing importance. The influence of salinity on the growth and quality of Chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum morifolium L. grown in two different media under four salinity levels was evaluated. C. morifolium plants were grown in plastic pots containing either zeolitic tuff or soil as potting media. Seedlings of C. morifolium were subjected to four NaCl/CaCl2 salinity levels (2, 4, 6, and 8 dS.… Show more

“…Among the top-selling and most famous cut flowers in the world, with a prominent position in the cut flower industry, is Chrysanthemum morifolium (Asteraceae). Chrysanthemums' big flower dimensions and very long vase life (post-harvest duration) are among the preferable quality traits that account for their great ornamental value [2,3]. Germany, France and the United Kingdom are the main markets for cut chrysanthemums in Europe, while The Netherlands, with 800 million stalks per year, and Italy, with 500 million stalks per year, are the main producers that dominate the European market [3,4].…”

However, cut flower production and handling are not eco-friendly processes; in fact, the farming and post-harvest handling of fresh flowers are correlated with a significant environmental and health impact.…”

“…Red Ruby recorded the lowest chlorophyll content of 49.77 SPAD value. This might be due to genetic differences among the cultivars and the effect of environment on it (Hong et al, 2015) [8] and these results were also supported by the work of Amarin et al (2021) [2] and Aind et al (2021) [1] .…”

“…Characteristics of the different growing media have direct and indirect impacts on the plant growth and production. The importance characteristics of ideal growing medium for agriculture are porous with good ventilation, good drainage, and cheap as well as good water retention (Amarin et al, 2021). The ideal growing substrate is determined by the characteristics that govern the growth and survival rate of transplanted propagation (Gruda, 2022).…”
