Performance of an inductively coupled plasma source ion trap mass spectrometer

Abstract: A unique system incorporating features of inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and ion trap mass spectrometry (ITMS) is described. The combined ICP-ITMS system is characterized instrumentally and the initial performance features are presented. Bare atomic ions are observed for all elements, including previously problematic high oxygen bond strength elements that produced high levels of MO, ' and M(OH),+ ions in early ICP-ITMS experiments. Approximate, unoptimized detection limits of 10-500 pg ml-' are reported. Ot… Show more

“…[6][7][8][9][10][11][12] Frum has also reported elemental spectra obtained with an ITMS using an ICP ion source and confirmed the selective reduction of certain plasma ions. 13 Benefits of our instrumental combination, dubbed the plasma source ion trap or PSIT, included a selective reduction in the intensity of certain problematic ion currents, including Ar + , ArO + and Ar 2 + .…”

“…Isotopic analysis was performed using the atomic ions for each of the elements except for U. As is well known from early work in ICP-MS on Paul-type traps [25,26], atomic metal ions are quite reactive towards residual atmospheric gases (particularly O 2 ) in the trapping cell. The extent of oxide formation is a function of the metal ion's native oxygen affinity.…”

“…Work in our laboratory has focused on use of the traditional inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) approach with an ion trap mass spectrometer added or substituted for the conventional linear quadrupole mass filter [15,16]. Our first attempt in this endeavor was to build a combined plasma-linear quadrupole ion trap instrument.…”
