Performance of Agitated Gas-Liquid Contactors

Abstract: If A method of studying the design variables pertinent to agitated gas-liquid reactors has been developed; the catalyzed rate of air oxidation of aqueous sodium sulfite and the agitator power consumption are measured. Volumetric absorption coefficients for agitated contactors are shown to vary with (agitator power)0•95 and with (gas velocity)0•67, giving rise to a new function, absorption number, defined as /Cy/V,0•67, where KY is the absorption coefficient and Vs is the average gas velocity based on the cross… Show more

“…The decision to use submerged culture techniques for penicillin production where aseptic conditions, good aeration and agitation were essential, was very important factor in forcing the design and development of acetifi ers. Initial agitators were studfi ied in baffl ed stirred tanks to identify variables fl 5 . Here the geometry of the stirred vessels has been used in the design of conventional fermenters.…”

“…at 37°C., a hydrogen-ion concentration of pH 7*6 was maintained throughout the 7 hr. of incubation ( Aeration Efficient aeration will depend upon the geometry of the vessel, degree of agitation and gas flow rate (Cooper et al 1944). In a vessel of standard design increased gas solution rates are obtained by shear action of a high-speed impeller in a baffled vessel or by use of a device to reduce bubble size when slow stirrer speeds are involved (Finn, 1954 orifices, sintered stainless steel gauze 8-10 ,t porosity (Hixon & Gaden, 1950) and standard grade Berkefeld bacteriological filter candles.…”

“…tion. C'est ainsi que la teneur en levure du milieu de culture était déterminée en prélevant des échantillons de liquide de 5 cm" qui étaient séchés, à 1050 C. Pour l'analyse du lactose contenu dans le milieu, on utilisait la méthode de STILES [8] et la vitesse d'absorption de l'oxygène dans l'appareil était déterminée par une modification de la méthode au sulfite de COOPER [9].…”
