Performance of a vertical subsurface flow (VSF) wetland treatment system using woodchips to treat livestock stormwater

Abstract: This study was conducted to develop a vertical subsurface flow (VSF) wetland remediation system packed with woodchips to control stormwater pollution arising from livestock agriculture. Three lab-scale VSF wetlands were operated with recirculation during the interval (Δ) between storms as 2, 4 and 8 days, respectively. The fed water was 100% recirculated one time per 24 h; the recirculation frequency was 1, 3 and 7 times at Δ of 2, 4 and 8 days, respectively. The constructed wetland systems proved to be effect… Show more

“…Por lo tanto, se han estudiado diferentes tipos de medios de carbono, como serrín, paja de trigo y astillas de madera (Drizo et al, 2022). Según Niu et al (2013), los humedales de astillas de madera han demostrado ser efectivos en la reducción de nitrógeno a través de la nitrificación seguida de la desnitrificación. A medida que se incrementan los tiempos de retención y recirculación, se promueve la eliminación del nitrógeno.…”

“…A gravel wetland was found to be effective in removing solids, metals and nutrients while reducing oxygen demand of runoff from a parking lot even with high pollutant loads (Choi et al, 2013). A vertical subsurface flow (VSF) packed with woodchips was found to effectively manage the water quality of runoff associated with livestock (Niu et al, 2013).…”

“…[7][8][9][10]. It is reported that Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been successfully employed to treat domestic sewage for its easy operation and maintain [11,12]. Consequently, the application of CWs for the purification of wastewater has been recently proposed as an alternative for the wastewater treatment and reuse [13][14][15].…”
