Performance of a SiPM based semi-monolithic scintillator PET detector

Abstract: A depth encoding PET detector module using semi-monolithic scintillation crystal single-ended readout by a SiPM array was built and its performance was measured. The semi-monolithic scintillator detector consists of 11 polished LYSO slices measuring 1  ×  11.6  ×  10 mm. The slices are glued together with enhanced specular reflector (ESR) in between and outside of the slices. The bottom surface of the slices is coupled to a 4  ×  4 SiPM array with a 1 mm light guide and silicon grease between them. No reflecto… Show more

“…The measurements were performed using an experimental setup similar to the one shown in our previous publication . The semi‐monolithic detector was irradiated at a series of given (y, z) positions with a narrow gamma ray beam obtained with electronic collimation by using a 0.25 mm diameter 22 Na point source and a reference detector consisting of a single 1 × 1 × 20 mm 3 LYSO crystal and a 3 × 3 mm 2 SiPM pixel.…”

“…For PET detectors using the dual‐ended readout of pixelated crystal arrays, it was demonstrated by several works that a rough crystal surface provided better DOI resolution but inferior crystal identification and energy resolution. Monolithic scintillator PET detectors using polished crystal surface with black paint, white paint, no reflector, and with enhanced specular reflector (ESR) were measured in previous works . As compared to monolithic scintillator detector using more reflective white paint and the ESR reflector, detectors using black paint reduced the edge effect and improved the spatial and DOI resolution, but degraded the energy and timing resolution.…”

“…The multiple scattering events were rejected using a method commonly used in calculating MAE of the position decoding of PET detectors. 29,43 Windows at 40% of the peak values of the event count distributions were applied. Only the events inside the windows were used in the MEA calculation.…”

“…Moreover, their DOI capabilities are limited by the number of layers. Another method is to use the quasi-monolithic crystals [26][27][28][29] or the monolithic crystals [30][31][32][33] to construct the DOI detectors. That method is very attractive and promising because of the advantages in filling factor, cost, and the potential performance.…”
